Mass transit ridership plummeted last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week, the Metropolitan Council reported that ridership fell by as much as 60 percent on local bus routes, 70 percent on light rail and 95 percent on express bus routes and the Northstar Commuter Rail line.
Officials say express ridership and commuter rail took the biggest hit as people who could started working from home instead of heading into the office in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The Metropolitan Council expects transit ridership to pickup this summer and fall as COVID cases decline and vaccinations increase.
