Mercy Hospital Prepares for Restart of Elective Surgeries

Governor Tim Walz is allowing elective surgeries to resume in Minnesota next week.  The new order covers hospitals and surgery centers along with dental and veterinary clinics.

Mercy Hospital officials say they are prepared for elective surgeries to begin on Monday.  Patients need to test negative for COVID-19.

The hospital has spent the last two months increasing personal protective equipment and other supplies.  They want the community to know they are still here and want people who need it to seek care.

"This is the busiest emergency department on the Mercy campus and Allina, over 63,000 visits a year," says Dan Steffen, Vice President of Operations at Mercy Hospital.  "But we dropped from our normal 1,200 plus visits a week to around 600, we are back up to about 1,000 visits a week now that volume has slowly returned so patients who were delaying care are coming back to the hospital which is good."

Mercy Hospital is directing traffic outside separating those with respiratory symptoms from those without.  Everyone inside the hospital is required to wear a mask.
