Session Teaches Parents About the Dangers of Teen Vaping

The Anoka-Hennepin School District is working to reverse a dangerous trend, teens using electronic cigarettes.

The district’s director of student services says “vaping” by youth has increased more than 50% in the last three years, “What that means to us is that about one in five young people, when we talk about teenagers, using or trying an e-cigarette within the last 30 days,” said Jennifer Cherry.

At an anti-vaping event at the Educational Service Center April 16th concerned parents learned why the sleek and easily disguised vaping devices are so harmful.

“The nicotine that could be in one of those pods is equivalent to a full pack of cigarettes,” Cherry said.

Expert presenters on the subject included the American Lung Association, the Brooklyn Park Police Department and a school principal.

“We do know these products do cause irreversible lung damage and are not safe,” said Heidi Larson with the American Lung Association.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating any link between e-cigarette use and 35 documented seizures.

The Anoka-Hennepin school district has more information and resources on its website. Also, anyone can get help with a vaping addiction through a free texting program. To learn more, visit becomeanex.org.
