Recycling has gotten easier over the years, but do you know what can and can’t be recycled? The Coon Rapids Recycling Center wants you to know you can still save on your trash bill by recycling, despite a changing global marketplace.
“With china closing its borders it’s kind of tipped some recycling upside down for a little bit,” said Recycling Coordinator Dana Higgins.
Some of the items the facility no longer accepts include Styrofoam packaging like take out containers, egg cartons and cups. Also, the types of plastic accepted are limited to numbers 1, 2 and 5.
“Right now a lot of people are trying to shake out a new normal and we’re really trying to correct the situation and get things balanced out,” Higgins said.
A free service returning to the Recycling Center is recycling for an unlimited number of fluorescent light bulbs for Coon Rapids residents.
“We believe we’re going to come through this stronger than where we were before this all happened,” said Higgins.
The Coon Rapids Recycling Center offers bulk paper shredding, mattress, appliance, and electronics recycling on select dates. To learn where you can recycle a particular item you can try a new Recycling App called “Anoka Country Recycles.”
