Honoring Those Who Protect and Serve

The Law Enforcement Appreciation Event returned to Coon Rapids for the 4th year. It began in 2015 when a local law enforcement family sought out a way to show community support for police officers in the face of anti-police attitudes.

“…they got to see and be a part of the burden of understanding the other side of what sacrifice looks like on the behalf of our blue and brown and all different protectors that serve our communities,” said Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart.

The September 15th daytime festivities at VFW post 9625 included live music, food trucks, a K-9 demonstration, rock climbing wall, and other games for children. Law Enforcement Agencies from around the Minnesota region displayed squad cars and officers were available to answer questions from the public.

“We’re not necessarily on a call or maybe a traffic stop we’re able to just talk to people as they come by and they’ve got a simple question they want to ask and we’re right here and available for them,” said Coon Rapids Police Department Officer Steven Beberg.

Sponsors raised more than $5,000 to put on the event and activities like Dunk-A-Cop and a silent auction helped raise close to $11,000 for two non-profits. The money will be donated equally to Backing the Blue Line and the Law Enforcement Memorial Association.
