For a Coon Rapids teen with a serious bone disease, time spent in the pool equals freedom.
To see 14-year-old Nick Jaques swim, kick and splash in the water, you would never know he has osteogenesis imperfecta. The disease causes his bones to break very easily... even from walking on a hard surface. Since birth, Nick has broken countless bones and undergone many surgeries. His most recent surgery to replace metal rods in his legs has left him in lots of pain and often prevents him from standing.
Unfortunately, Nick has exhausted the amount of pool therapy available to him. Meanwhile, the slippery surfaces and high traffic of public pools can pose great danger to his fragile bones. So friends and neighbors are trying to raise $60,000 to help Nick's family purchase a pool. They envision a place where Nick can be pain free and work to strengthen his bones and muscles.
“I feel like I can do anything I want, really,” Nick says about his time spent in the water.
“I can throw balls, I can dive, I can swim, walk, just normal things that I can't normally do.”
Nick’s mom, Ruth Jacques, says the effort to raise money for her son is humbling and brings her to tears. She loves to watch Nick when he’s swimming.
“It's just incredible. He's free. He's free. He can go anywhere and, like, just be a kid, just swim and get to anything he wants to get to. He doesn't need our help. Yeah, it's really amazing!” she says.
