New Exhibit at Banfill-Locke Center Features Farm Animals

A new exhibition at the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley is taking its visitors “Back to the Farm.”

The collection of paintings by artist Patty Voje include pigs, cows, sheep and other farm animals as the subject.

“I remember a long time ago in a class where everyone was painting flowers and vases with flowers and stuff and I was painting a pig and everyone is like ‘Oh that’s a funny choice. Why are you painting a pig?’ and I’m like ‘I don’t know. I just kind of gravitate towards it,’” said Voje on opening night June 23rd.

Voje moved to a 10 acre farm when she was in the 4th grade and has had a connection to farm animals ever since.

“They have emotions just like people do and they have bad days and they have good days and they get scared and they’re happy. It’s all there,” Voje said.

Some of the paintings were done Plein Air style, out in nature. Most were done in the studio with photographs she took as a reference.

“Nothing replaces the in person experience,” said Voje.

She hopes visitors to the “Back to the Farm” exhibition see the expressive animals and think about them differently.

“I hope it makes people happy to look at them,” said Voje.

Patty Voje’s work will be on display at Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts through July 21st.  For more information, click here.
