Former Football Pro Coaches Local Athletes

When a former NFL quarterback gives you advice, you do your best to soak it up.  At least that’s what Jake Vanhulzen tried to do this week during a football camp at Sand Creek Athletic Park.

“Totally, I'll be able to use this in a game and in practice and improve every day,” said Vanhulzen.

The quarterback at Coon Rapids High School joined a dozen youth and high school football players for an up close coaching session from Sean Salisbury hosted by the Coon Rapids Athletic Association.

Salisbury spent eight seasons in the NFL and was a Vikings quarterback from 1990 to 1994. Now he shares his skills with the younger set and traveled to Coon Rapids from his home in Texas for the one-day camp.

“I'm in the self-esteem building business, not tearing down, and to be able to teach kids and coach them at the same time, and watch their eyes light up, that's the reason I do it. I love it,” said Salisbury.

A couple dozen players made for an intimate session during Salisbury’s first visit. The Coon Rapids Athletic Association hopes to make it an annual football camp.

“Coach Salisbury knows a lot about the game, a lot about mechanics for a quarterbacks, and he's a great dude to learn from,” said Vanhulzen.

Salisbury understands that his NFL pedigree carries weight with the young players.  He says it’s something he’s very grateful to put to good use.

“Knowledge is gold for all of us and if I can share a little bit of knowledge, then I've done my job.”
