Lions Attempt Red Wagon World Record at Anoka Co. Fairgrounds

Lions Clubs from across Minnesota and parts of Canada gathered at the Anoka Country Fairgrounds on June 10th to celebrate 100 years of service. Its members also made an attempt at a world record by holding a red wagon parade.

A total of 111 Lions registered for the parade, not enough to scratch out the old record of 288, yet another goal was achieved.

“We’d love to be able to break a world record but really the red wagons are really a catalyst or a prop just to show our service and what we do for our communities,” said Lion Vicki Violet.

The Lions Club five avenues of service were represented in unique fashion with each red wagon: hunger, youth, environment, diabetes and vision.

“In 1925 that’s when Hellen Keller stepped up and said Lion’s I am challenging you to be knights of the blind and that’s really when we took off with our vision and that’s was our first core service project,” Violet said.

More than 100,000 prescription glasses and sun glasses were collected from across the state. They will be sorted and distributed in communities abroad. Food was also collected for distribution to local families.

“This is the best thing, especially for our community. I can’t imagine a lot of our communities without the Lion’s organization because we’re out there and where there’s a need there’s a lion,” said Lion Jim Nesseth.

Despite not setting a world record, Lion Cheryl Thompson said the parade was a first for any Lions Club International group.
