Mental Health Walk Raising Awareness in the Community

For the ninth year the Mental Wellness Campaign for Anoka County hosted a day of exercise in the name of promoting mental wellness. The 5K walk for Mental Wellness at the Coon Rapids Dam on May 12th included live music and access to community resources.

“It’s a really good chance for people to speak with one another, walk with one another but also get some information,” said Denise Kirmis, the Mental Wellness Campaign Vice-chair.

Mental Health Advocate Cynthia Blesi told the crowd of 150 how she found help for her mental illness.

“I was in the state hospital for six months back in 1998 and that changed my life. I lived with a lot of mental illness but I’m here today to tell you mental illness is not a life sentence and it is not a death sentence,” said Blesi.

The walk also serves as a fundraiser for the Mental Wellness Campaign which provides mental health first-aid and a new training workshop.

“Our new project this year is called ‘Happy Hour’ which is really based on positive psychology and talks a lot about how we do exercises for our brains like we do for our bodies. So we start becoming to be positive folks which helps our mental health tremendously,” said Donna McDonald who serves on the Mental Wellness Campaign board.
