Soccer is synonymous with the National Sports Center in Blaine. But now they're getting into court sports.Work started this week on the installation of equipment for three high school volleyball courts, two basketball courts and an NBA-sized basketball court overlay. The National Sports Center is investing around $300,000 with in-ceiling mounted, state of the art equipment."I see this as essentially kind of a sport development, sports training more than anything," says George Ellis, Sports Development Director at the National Sports Center. "Obviously with two courts or three volleyball courts, you're not going to do a large tournament in this space so this to me is really a training ground and a practice ground so young people will be able to jump on the court and get their skill development in with their team or a trainer."Next week, more than 13,000 square feet of beechwood flooring will be installed along with a custom paint job. Work should be finished by May 10th and men's league play will start on May 23rd.The long term plan is to periodically remove the courts for major events in the Sport Expo Center.
